PROOF OF THE SILVERWING TV SERIES FLUSHING THE BOOKS DOWN THE TOILET!!!!

Kenneth Oppel wrote:

The Characters of Silverwing

"Once I'd decided to write a book about bats, I wanted all my bat characters to be based on real species. It was important to me that my characters seem like real animals, and not just cartoon creations. By using real bats as my inspiration, I was also able to include all sorts of factual information in the story, and this helped make my fantasy more believable. There are almost a thousand species of bats in the world, and I looked at lots of different kinds before choosing the ones on which my heroes are based." K.O.

Finally, some Silverwing stuff!

Well, I actually have one other Silverwing drawing on DA, but it is incomplete and has a HUGE error in it (no idea why I made that mistake). And I have other drawings that are just doodles, and never bothered to scan and put on the internet.

The Silverwing Trilogy are some of my favorite books. Bats are the leading characters, but they are not over-the-top personified. In other words, they look like bats and aside from speaking english, exihibit bat behaviors (that last statement was a stab at the TV series, who not only added a bunch of junk that didn't exist in the novel, but somehow became conviced that bats had long blond hair with highlights or mohawks-- I'm thoroughly convinced that the animators had never opened an animal book in their life, and found the whole production extremly disrespectful).

So, here I have the leads, Shade and Marina! They call themselves Silverwings and Brightwings, which is not (from what I've gathered) primarily based on their wings, but their body patterns. Silverwing, or silver haired bats as they are called in real life, are black and grey with silver hairs on their backs. Brightwings, or red bats, are .... you guessed it, red! And seeing that bats cannot see color, a silver hair would perceive a red bat to be much brighter than himself.

I think it's kind of a sloppy drawing. I wanted to do wing detail, but it looks a little messy, expecially on Marina. Other than that, the faces look okay, I suppose. I tried very hard to make them as much like the real thing as possible.

Briefly sketched out first (lines and circles, no detail). Inked in the ball point pen on my desk (same one as the spider drawing, ho hum). If you see any sudden blotches, much like the tarantula illustration, they are not exactly part of the concoction, just an ill-timed globlet of ink shedding from the pen at an inconvenient instant.

I think it looks really good! I've never read the books- only seen one of the movies o_O And you're right; it was a disgrace XD Sounds like the books are MUCH better though, I might have to check them out :D

And I like your explanation of why they call themselves Silverwings or Brightwings- it makes sense to me! <3

I love this piece. The detail, and anatomy of it is incredible.
The way you've inked the piece is also an addition to it.
Do you have a particular 'inking routine', or do you just go for it?
I know some people have secrets to their art, lol.

Either way, a breathtaking piece. Incredible! :+favlove:
Wow, really well done! Lots of detail. :D I love the texture you did on the wings and the way the shading came out so well!

The Silverwing Trilogy, huh? I'll have to investigate. Bats are cool. :D

If we are what we eat... does that mean we're cannibals?
The texture is lovely. And such sweet little faces! I did see the hideous cartoon on TV one time, it was just...frightening. I much prefer these. Without doubt...

Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.
